UNICOVR Custom-made Shade Sail

shade sails in Southern Germany – Regions, Altitudes, and City Terraces

Southern Germany combines very diverse conditions: compact urban terraces, vineyards, low mountain ranges, and properties on the edge of the Alps. A shade sail should therefore not be planned according to a blanket "Southern Germany size," but rather according to the sun's path, attachment points, heights, and usage.

Sloped properties: Height and gradient must be part of the planning

On tiered terraces or hillsides, a top-down view is often not enough. A side view shows how high walls, railings, and attachment points are actually located. This helps with clearance height, tensioning, and, in the case of waterproof material, above all with water drainage.

On hillside and garden terraces, height planning is often just as important as the actual fabric dimensions.

Especially in the Alpine foothills or on terraced properties, it is worth consciously defining the lowest and highest points. This ensures the passage remains comfortable and, in the case of a waterproof design, rainwater is not directed toward the house wall or onto the stairs.

Bavaria: from courtyards to beer gardens

In Bavaria, applications range from small city gardens to large catering areas. Rectangles shade long rows of tables efficiently, trapezoids fit better with diverging surfaces, and multiple sails can separate seating areas from one another.

In a Munich courtyard, every available wall point often counts, while in a Franconian beer garden, rows of tables, trees, and walkways usually dictate the geometry. A custom-made sail should accommodate this usage instead of just covering as much area as possible.

Baden-Württemberg: hillsides, wine regions, and the Lake Constance area

In Baden-Württemberg, tiered properties and staggered attachment points are common. Precise height planning is particularly worthwhile here because shape and gradient are directly related.

At the edge of the Black Forest and on slopes, different corner heights quickly become an important planning factor. Around Lake Constance or the Upper Rhine, however, a more open terrace may be more affected by wind and intense sunlight. The appropriate shape therefore always results from the location and usage.

HDPE or waterproof polyester?

HDPE remains air-permeable and allows rain to pass through. Waterproof polyester provides additional protection against precipitation but requires a distinct gradient. For hotels, catering, and larger facilities, several manageable sails are often more practical than a single maximum-size surface.

For a pure shade spot in the garden, HDPE is often pleasant because air and precipitation can pass through the fabric. For a restaurant, hotel, or regularly used dining area, the waterproof version can offer more comfort—provided that the slope and water drainage are planned carefully.

Large spans and few attachment points

On wide terraces or in spacious gardens, a single XXL shade sail is not automatically the best solution. Two coordinated sails can shade dining and lounge areas more effectively, keep pathways clear, and are easier to dismantle later. If suitable wall points are missing, additional posts can significantly improve the geometry.

Especially on existing buildings, the load-bearing capacity of the intended anchor points should be clarified before final measurement. Plaster or cladding alone do not make a reliable attachment point. The shape follows the secure points—not the other way around.

Between the Alpine foothills, the Upper Rhine, and the city garden

Even within Southern Germany, typical installation situations change significantly. In the Alpine foothills and on slopes, height differences and easily accessible tensioning points play a greater role. In the Upper Rhine Plain or in densely built urban areas, the focus is often on shading a terrace specifically without unnecessarily restricting windows, doors, or air circulation.

Usage also differs: A private dining area usually needs a clearly defined shade zone. In a hotel, beer garden, or restaurant, rows of tables, service paths, and multiple usage times come into play. Therefore, the same area might be well solved with one rectangle in one case and with two smaller trapezoids in another.

Which custom design looks calm rather than cluttered?

Especially on high-quality terraces, less is often more. A custom-made shade sail should complement the architecture rather than fill every available corner. With long facades, a slim rectangle often looks calmer; with staggered walls, a trapezoid or a straight free-form shape can blend in more harmoniously. This is not just a question of aesthetics: clear geometries are usually easier to tension and simpler to handle later on.
