Baden-Württemberg combines dense urban locations, Black Forest slopes, wine regions, and terraces on Lake Constance. Especially with terraced properties, it is not just the footprint that matters, but also the height of the individual attachment points.

Slopes: a side view prevents many mistakes

Stairs, walls, railings, and varying heights influence passage, tension, and water drainage. Rectangles are suitable for clear geometries, while trapezoids and straight free-forms work for staggered anchor points.

On the edge of the Black Forest or on terraced plots, a few height differences can determine whether water drains properly and there is enough headroom under the sail. Therefore, corner heights should be documented just as carefully as side lengths.

Urban terraces: precise rather than larger

In Stuttgart and Freiburg, compact properties often encounter height differences. Mannheim, Karlsruhe, and Heidelberg also feature courtyards, balconies, and catering areas.

In Stuttgart or Freiburg, small plots also frequently encounter slopes. In Mannheim, Karlsruhe, or Heidelberg, however, the focus is often on courtyards and more densely built-up terraces. What they all have in common: the actually used shade zone is more important than the maximum fabric area.

Hotel, daycare center, and business: dividing shade into zones

Multiple sails can be clearly assigned to individual areas. This facilitates installation and later handling. A maximum individual size is not automatically the most practical solution.

A hotel garden requires different paths than a daycare center courtyard or a break area at work. If individual areas are shaded separately, walkways can be kept clear and the sails are easier to assign, clean, or take down seasonally later on.

HDPE or rain protection?

HDPE provides airy, water-permeable shade. PU-coated polyester keeps rain out and requires a slope. The choice of material should be determined before height planning.

HDPE is well-suited for airy shade areas where rain is allowed to pass through. Waterproof polyester is more interesting if tables or lounge areas should remain usable even during a shower. In this case, the inclination, lowest point, and drainage must be determined before ordering.

Terraces on a slope: plan shape and water path together

Terraced properties often create good conditions for a waterproof shade sail because different heights are already present. However, it is crucial that the lowest point is chosen deliberately and that water does not run toward the house wall, stairs, or seating area.

For large areas around hotels, gastronomy, or commercial properties, dividing into several sails can be the better solution. This keeps individual areas flexible and makes the sails easier to label, install, and store seasonally.

Between the Black Forest, Upper Rhine, and Lake Constance

Baden-Württemberg is particularly varied for shade sails: on the edge of the Black Forest and on slopes, height differences play a greater role; in the Upper Rhine Plain, it is more about heat and open terraces; in the Lake Constance region, there is the added factor of tourist use and windy locations. A custom-made shade sail should address these differences rather than just being selected according to a standard size.

For a hillside terrace, the corner heights are decisive. On a level city terrace, however, the question of how much light is preserved and whether doors or windows can swing freely may be more important.

Wine region, hotel, and outdoor gastronomy

In wine regions and catering areas, long table groups and clearly defined walkways are typical. Rectangles use such areas efficiently. If the terrace runs at an angle, a trapezoid may be a better fit. For hotels or larger facilities, multiple sails are often more practical than a single large area.

For wineries and hotel terraces, the daily routine can also change: breakfast, lunch, and dinner do not always use the same tables. Multiple sails offer more flexibility here and can be better adapted to existing walls, trees, or paths.
