With large south- and west-facing windows, the heat does not start inside the room. Direct sunlight hits the glass and warms the surfaces behind it. A properly positioned shade sail can reduce this radiation from the outside while simultaneously creating a usable shaded area in front of the house.
Dimensioning window shading according to the sun's angle
A low-lying west window often requires a different sail position than a south-facing glass front. Check the shadow cast in the early and late afternoon. The fabric does not have to cover the entire window area; the decisive factor is capturing the steep or shallow radiation during the hottest time of the day.

Not all facades are load-bearing surfaces
Plaster, external thermal insulation composite systems (ETICS), and the underlying masonry perform different functions. Tensile loads must not be introduced into the insulation alone. Clarify the wall structure and use a suitable mounting concept or independent masts.

Preserve light, view, and air circulation
Light fabric colors and sufficient distance from the facade maintain an open sense of space. HDPE is air-permeable; waterproof polyester can additionally protect the terrace or window area from a shower, but requires a clear slope away from the facade and door.
Another practical classification is provided by Mounting shade sails on ETICS facades.
Checklist for external heat protection
- Document the hottest time of day and affected windows
- Clarify the wall structure before any drilling
- Plan fabric clearance for air and window opening
- Do not direct rainwater toward the facade or threshold
Custom shapes combine external heat protection with a usable terrace – without covering the entire facade.
Order facade shade sails individually
UNICOVR shade sails can be configured as rectangles, squares, triangles, trapezoids, or free-form shapes with straight edges. Select the shape, enter the fabric dimensions, and add the desired options. The price is displayed directly. How it is calculated is explained on the page What does a custom shade sail cost?
