Hessen combines urban balconies in the Rhine-Main area, hillside gardens, vineyards, and more spacious plots in Northern Hesse, all within a small area. For a shade sail, this means: first understand the actual space and how it is used, then determine the shape and size.
Hillside terrace: first, determine the heights
With uneven terrain, different attachment heights change the overall effect of the sail. They determine the clearance height, the slope, and the subsequent water runoff path. A trapezoid or a straight custom shape can adapt to sloping walls or offset posts.

Especially on the edge of the Taunus or on staggered properties, different corner heights can be used to good effect. It is important that the clearance height and water runoff are correct and that the eventual tensioning points remain accessible without unnecessary effort.
Rhine-Main: little space, many functions
In Frankfurt, Wiesbaden, and Darmstadt, doors, railings, property boundaries, and seating areas often compete for space on balconies and small terraces. A custom-made narrow rectangle can be more effective here than a small triangle.
On compact city terraces, a clear priority is therefore helpful: Where is the table placed, which door must swing freely, and which area actually needs shade in the afternoon? These questions often lead to a sleeker and better solution than maximizing the total area.
Northern Hesse: subdividing larger gardens logically
Around Kassel, larger gardens are more common. A separate sail over a dining or play area can create more targeted shade and remains easier to manage.
On larger properties in the Kassel area or outside dense city locations, posts can be placed more freely. This allows the shade to be precisely positioned over a dining area, play area, or lounge without being forced to use the house facade as the only mounting surface.
HDPE or waterproof?
HDPE is suitable for airy sun protection. Polyester with a PU coating provides additional protection against rain, provided the sail is installed with a sufficient slope.
HDPE remains breathable and allows precipitation to pass through, which is often ideal for pure shade areas. If you want to use a dining or guest area even during a brief shower, you should opt for waterproof polyester and plan for the slope and drainage accordingly.
Large spans in gardens or vineyards
On elongated terraces and larger gardens, a single large sail is not strictly necessary. Two separate sails can shade a dining area and a lounge more precisely and are easier to handle. In commercial spaces, paths can also be kept clear more easily.
For rented balconies and city terraces, however, the rule is: first clarify the permitted and technically suitable attachment options, then determine the dimensions of the sail.
Rhine-Main, Taunus, and Northern Hesse
In Hesse, dense city locations meet hillside properties and larger gardens. In the Rhine-Main area, space is often tight: doors, railings, neighbor boundaries, and limited wall points determine the shape. Towards the Taunus or in hilly areas, heights and slopes become more important. In Northern Hesse, on the other hand, larger garden areas are more frequently available.
A custom-made shade sail should therefore not look the same everywhere. For a city balcony, a small rectangle might be ideal, while a hillside property works better with a trapezoid or a straight custom shape.
Vineyard, gastronomy, and long terraces
For long table arrangements or catered terraces, a rectangle is usually efficient. Large areas can be shaded more flexibly with multiple sails, keeping walkways and entrances clear. For additional rain protection, waterproof polyester is an interesting option, provided the slope and drainage are planned from the very beginning.
For long rows of tables, it should also be considered how staff and guests move around. A sail that only considers the furniture can quickly become a nuisance in everyday operation. Several narrower sails can often be better adapted to paths and different usage times.
