Each attachment point absorbs tension in its own direction. Thin posts, light fences, and purely decorative components are therefore often unsuitable. For a mast, the cross-section, inclination, foundation, and soil conditions count as a complete package. The question of a straight or slanted mast cannot be answered by taste alone.
Water-permeable or rainproof?
HDPE allows air to circulate and rain to pass through. The waterproof polyester version provides additional protection against precipitation, provided it is installed at an angle and kept taut. In an open location, the ability to quickly dismantle the sail during a storm should remain easily accessible in both cases.
Those who primarily want shade and air circulation are usually well served by HDPE; rain can drain through the fabric. If a dining or guest area needs to remain usable during a shower, waterproof polyester is an option. In that case, the slope and water drainage must be determined from the very beginning.
