An open horse pasture can feel very long on a hot summer day – especially if the only shade moves with the sun or is non-existent. On paddocks, corrals, and open stable areas, a custom-planned shade sail can create an additional shaded zone. The decisive factor is not just the size of the fabric. After all, horses, posts, fences, pathways, and wind do not take pretty sketches into account.
UNICOVR shade sails are made to measure. This allows the sail area to be adapted to existing areas of the equestrian facility, rather than having to adapt the usage to a standard size.
Shade sails for horse pastures and paddocks: Planning shade where horses can use it
A shaded area should be positioned so that the animals can reach it voluntarily and without any bottlenecks. Therefore, check not only the position of the sun but also pasture gates, water troughs, feeding stations, and typical walkways. In group housing, the construction must not create narrow dead-end areas where lower-ranking animals might struggle to move away.
If trees or a shelter are already present, a shade sail can complement these areas. Where natural shade is lacking, an additional zone can be specifically created exactly where it is actually needed throughout the day.

Paddock, open stable, corral, or riding arena – not every area needs the same sail
- Horse pasture and corral: large enough for a useful shaded zone without hindering fence lines and maintenance paths.
- Paddock and open stable: arrange attachment points so that no reachable ropes, fittings, or sharp components protrude into the movement area.
- Riding arena: often, it is not the entire riding surface that is useful, but the edge area – such as a waiting zone, trainer spot, spectator or break area.
- Equestrian facility and yard: additional shaded spots at a wash area, lounge zone, or between stable buildings can be planned separately.
Why air-permeable sun protection is often sensible for open animal areas
For pure shading, a water-permeable, air-permeable material is particularly suitable. Wind can pass through the fabric, and precipitation is not collected as a large volume of water at a single edge. If a waterproof version is used, gradients, drainage, and the much more enclosed appearance of the surface must be planned very carefully.
For covered waiting or lounge areas for people, however, rain protection can be an interesting option. Therefore, material and application should not be determined generically for the entire equestrian facility.
Think about installation outside the horse area
A horse should never be able to reach tension cables, fittings, or other technical parts. Masts, foundations, and anchor points must be professionally designed for the forces involved. Even fences, thin wooden posts, or improvised stable components are not automatically suitable attachment points.
The custom-made sailcloth is a component of the facility. Support structure, foundations, distances, and the specific safety of the construction must be planned according to the site. Existing requirements for shelters or animal husbandry are not automatically replaced by a shade sail.

Adapting shape and size to the existing equestrian facility
Rectangles and squares use an area efficiently but require four consistent directions of tension. A triangle can be practical if there are three suitable points, but it provides less shade at the tips. A trapezoid or a free-form shape with straight edges is worth considering if existing buildings, fences, and posts are not at right angles to each other.
For larger spans, it is often more sensible to plan several manageable sails rather than one single huge surface. Our page on shade sails for large areas is a good resource for this.
Weather routine is part of the equestrian facility
On open pastures and riding arenas, wind and gusts are often stronger than between buildings. Before the season starts, determine who will check the tension, in what weather conditions the sail should be taken down, and where it can be stored dry. A sail that only needs to be released for the first time during an approaching thunderstorm does not make for a particularly relaxed stable routine.
