In a Bonn old-building courtyard, sunlight often hits the seating area directly for only a few hours. On the hillside towards Venusberg or in Bad Godesberg, however, the terrace can lie open in the sun for a long time. The fact that both areas are "four by five meters" in size says surprisingly little about the right shade sail.
Shade sails for Bonn courtyards and hillside terraces
In a courtyard, facades, balconies, and trees determine the possible placement. On a hillside terrace, wind and varying attachment heights become more important. Custom-made sailcloths allow these requirements to be met without covering the entire outdoor space with an oversized standard surface.

Not all old-building facades are load-bearing walls
Natural stone, brick, thermal insulation, and subsequently clad surfaces require different mounting solutions. With EIFS (External Thermal Insulation Composite Systems), the load must not simply end in the insulation. The guide on attaching to insulated facades explains why a load-bearing connection is so important.
Rainwater in a narrow courtyard
With a waterproof sail, it must be determined before installation where the water will run. A slope away from doors and basement entrances makes sense; at the same time, the runoff must not hit a neighbor's property. In small courtyards, HDPE is sometimes the less complicated choice if rain protection is not the priority.
Rectangle, trapezoid, or triangle?
A rectangle shades the table efficiently, a trapezoid can accommodate a diagonally running courtyard wall. Triangles look airy but usually require larger outer dimensions for the same shaded area. Free-form shapes are particularly interesting if four or more existing points do not fit neatly into a standard format.
Plaster, insulation, railings, extensions, or visible masonry are not automatically suitable anchor points. Before final measurement, it should therefore be clarified where the tensile forces can be safely introduced into the building structure. If a load-bearing point is missing in the right place, an additional post can be the cleaner solution.

Typical areas of application in Bonn
- Courtyards in densely built-up areas
- Terraces on Bonn hillsides
- Balconies and roof areas
- Outdoor seating for practices, offices, and gastronomy
On private terraces and in gardens, the focus is usually on a clearly defined seating or dining area. In gastronomy, daycare centers, or commercial spaces, walkways, multiple users, and often multiple cloths are involved. In Bonn, therefore, the entire outdoor area is not covered as a blanket rule; instead, the areas that are actually used are shaded.
