Aachen can experience several different types of weather in a single afternoon. This is quite helpful when planning a shade sail: you quickly realize whether you only want shade or if the table should remain usable after a shower.
Shade sails for Aachen courtyards and terraces
Natural stone, brick, and slightly uneven layouts characterize many older courtyards. Modern terraces add insulated facades and larger glass surfaces. A custom-made solution connects these very different starting points not through a standard design, but through correctly positioned points and an appropriate shape.
Plaster, insulation, railings, extensions, or visible masonry are not automatically suitable anchor points. Before the final measurement, it should therefore be clarified where the tensile forces can be safely transferred into the building structure. If a load-bearing point is missing in the appropriate spot, an additional post can be the cleaner solution.
Rain protection begins at the lowest point
With PU-coated polyester, water must be drained in a targeted manner. The sail requires a slope and a low corner where the runoff does not hit a doorway, light well, or neighbor's courtyard. Our article Shade sails in the rain explains the practical limitations.
HDPE when air is more important than dryness
An HDPE sail provides shade and allows precipitation to pass through. In sheltered courtyards, air circulation can be more pleasant than under a dense surface. For seating areas with sensitive cushions, however, a waterproof version is a more logical choice.

Fastening in old masonry
The visible stone surface should not deceive you regarding its load-bearing capacity. Joints, facing shells, and old repair spots are not automatically suitable anchor points. Have the construction checked on-site; we only provide installation services in Berlin and Brandenburg.

Typical areas of application in Aachen
- Courtyards of old buildings with natural stone or brick
- Terraces on insulated facades
- Gardens on slopes or on the outskirts
- Outdoor areas for catering and medical practices
On private terraces and in gardens, the focus is usually on a clearly defined seating or dining area. For catering establishments, daycare centers, or commercial properties, pathways, multiple users, and often several sails are involved. Therefore, in Aachen, we do not simply cover the entire outdoor area, but rather shade the areas that are actually used.
Configure UNICOVR shade sails individually
Choose between rectangular, square, triangular, trapezoidal, or a special straight shape. Then, enter the fabric dimensions and the desired features. For planning the distances between the sail and the wall, our guide on proper mounting will help.

For the order, the attachment points, side lengths, and, for four-sided shapes, the diagonals are recorded first. Then, the necessary tensioning space is taken into account. The actual fabric dimension is entered – not simply the distance between the anchor points.
