On a terrace above the lake basin, the morning can begin pleasantly cool, and the seating area can be in full sun just a few hours later. In densely built-up areas, there is an additional factor: the shade sail should provide shade without unnecessarily obstructing the view or overwhelming the already limited outdoor space.
Custom shade sails for Zurich terraces and gardens
It is not just the dimensions that differ between old courtyards, roof terraces, and hillside properties. In exposed locations, wind and secure anchor points play a greater role; in a sheltered courtyard, the goal is often to cover a table or bench as precisely as possible with a narrow, asymmetrical shape. A standard sail rarely fits perfectly in such cases.

Plan for shade before ordering the sailcloth
Observe the area during the times it is actually used. Shade moves—and it often moves away from the table just as lunch is beginning. Our alignment guide helps you consider the position of the sun, mounting heights, and the resulting shadow cast together.
To place an order, first take the measurements of the attachment points, side lengths, and—for four-sided shapes—the diagonals. Then, the necessary tensioning space must be accounted for. The actual sail size—not simply the distance between the anchor points—is what should be entered.

Bise, Foehn, and exposed rooftop locations
A shade sail acts as a wind-catchment area. On open roof terraces and hillsides, the mounting and substructure should therefore be assessed by a suitable professional on-site. You can find information on sizing and timely removal in our guide Shade sails in wind and storms.
Waterproof or permeable?
For simple shading, HDPE is comfortable because the fabric remains air and water permeable. If the seating area also needs to be protected from rain, PU-coated polyester is an option. In this case, the sail requires a clearly planned incline and a drainage path that does not end at the neighbor's property or directly in front of your balcony door.
Typical areas of application in Zurich
- Terraces and seating areas on hillsides
- Courtyards with staggered facades
- Balconies and smaller roof terraces
- Gastronomy spaces with clearly defined shaded areas
On private terraces and in gardens, the focus is usually on a clearly defined seating or dining area. In the case of catering, daycare centers, or commercial properties, the focus also includes walkways, multiple users, and often multiple sails. In Zurich, we therefore do not simply cover the entire outdoor area, but rather shade the areas that are actually in use.
Configure UNICOVR shade sails online
Rectangle, square, triangle, trapezoid, or a straight custom shape: the UNICOVR shade sail is configured based on the shape, dimensions, and features you choose. It is important not to simply take the distance between the mounting points as the fabric size. Tensioning paths and connecting elements require space. Our measurement guide shows you how to do this step-by-step.
