On Mallorca, good sun protection is rarely achieved by using as much fabric as possible. A finca terrace near Sóller, an interior courtyard in Palma, and a breezy pool area in the interior of the island all present very different challenges. A custom shade sail on Mallorca is therefore planned based on its intended use, the position of the sun, and the available mounting points.

For a natural stone terrace, an elongated rectangle can create a large, continuous area of shade. At the pool, the entry area must remain clear, while on a roof terrace, safe handling in windy conditions becomes a more significant factor. In angular courtyards, trapezoidal or straight free-form shapes can accommodate offset walls.
Large properties do not automatically require a single large shade sail. Two smaller sails can shade a dining area and a lounge separately and can be oriented to different sun directions.

Where the sail is exposed to direct sun for many hours, UV-resistant material is a standard requirement. Water-permeable HDPE provides airy shade and allows heat to escape upwards. If the terrace is also to remain usable during a rain shower, waterproof, PU-coated polyester is an option. In this case, the slope, tension, and water drainage must be perfectly aligned.

Rectangle, triangle, trapezoid, or straight free-form?
A rectangle usually uses space efficiently, while a triangle provides more targeted shade and has a lighter appearance. Trapezoids suit diverging terrace edges. The UNICOVR free-form shape uses straight edges and is suitable for offset anchor points. For L-shaped areas, two separate sails are often neater than one complicated, large-scale shape.

Hotels, finca rental agencies, restaurants, and cafés need clear walkways, easily accessible connections, and a logical arrangement of multiple sails in addition to shade. Table groups, doors, escape routes, and pool edges are therefore taken into account in the initial measured sketch. When using multiple sails, numbering them by area helps.
