A shade sail can flexibly shade a patio and, with waterproof material, provide additional protection from rain. However, it is not a rigid patio roof: the fabric remains a tensioned textile, reacts to wind, and requires a clearly planned water drainage system. It is precisely these differences that should be openly considered before ordering.
The UNICOVR shade sail is available as a tightly tensioned custom solution in rectangle, square, triangle, trapezoid, and free-form shapes with straight edges. We do not offer a rope-tensioned awning with sliding fabric panels or a complete pergola system as part of our own range.
Planning a shade sail as a flexible patio roof
Start with how it will be used: Should the dining table be in the shade at noon, should the seating area be protected in the evening, or should a short rain shower not immediately drive you indoors? The answer determines the position, size, and material more than the patio dimensions alone.

A waterproof shade sail requires a slope
Coated polyester with PU coating keeps the rain out. To prevent water from pooling, the attachment points must be at different heights, and the fabric must be evenly tensioned. The water needs a defined low side – away from doors, facades, walkways, and neighboring areas.
The guide What slope does a waterproof shade sail need? explains the underlying principles.
Shade sail or fixed patio roof?
A sail has a lighter appearance, can be taken down seasonally, and can be adapted to unusual geometries. A fixed roof is more suitable if year-round use, snow loads, integrated drainage, or a permanently closed cover are required. The right solution therefore depends not only on the price but on the desired usage profile.
The comparison Shade sail or awning also helps to categorize movable and more permanent shading solutions.
Attachment to house walls and free-standing posts
Wall points must be anchored in load-bearing structural components; insulation, cladding, or gutters are not automatically suitable. Free-standing masts and foundations require planning adapted to the location and load. An existing load-bearing frame or pergola can at best serve as an on-site attachment point after professional inspection. However, this does not turn it into a sliding shading system offered by us.
Wind, ease of use, and seasonal removal
The construction must be planned so that fittings remain accessible and the sail can be taken down in time during strong winds. "Waterproof" does not automatically mean "permanently installed for all weather conditions." Check the fabric, seams, corners, and attachments regularly.
Configuring a custom shade sail patio roof
Only measure once the shape, slope, and final attachment points have been determined. In the configurator, you enter the fabric dimensions and desired extras and see the price immediately. For large spans, new foundations, or unclear wall construction, the on-site planning should be professionally verified.
