Between a Viennese inner courtyard, a Graz garden terrace, and a hotel area in Tyrol, there are completely different installation situations. For a shade sail in Austria, the deciding factor is how the area is actually used, where load-bearing attachment points are located, and whether height differences can be effectively utilized for tension and slope.

Tyrol and hillside locations: the third dimension is decisive
For terraces on slopes or in alpine environments, measurements should not just be taken from above. Varying heights between the house wall, masonry, and posts influence the clearance height, fabric tension, and, in the case of waterproof material, water drainage. A simple side view is therefore often just as important as the floor plan.
For hotels, holiday homes, and catering establishments, another point comes into play: the sail must remain accessible. Several medium-sized sails covering a breakfast area, lounge, and terrace are often more practical than a single maximum-sized surface that can only be taken down with great effort later.
Vienna and other urban locations: existing architecture sets the limits
In Vienna, balconies, inner courtyards, and roof terraces often have few suitable attachment points. A custom-made sail can adapt to offset walls or narrow floor plans without unnecessarily covering windows, doors, or adjacent areas.
In Graz, Salzburg, and Linz, applications range from private gardens to commercial terraces. A long rectangle is suitable for a table group, a trapezoid for diverging walls, and a straight free-form shape for offset attachment points.
Catering: planning shade according to table layout
For cafes, hotels, or restaurants, the entire terrace should not be covered indiscriminately. It is more important to consider the actual table rows occupied, walkways, and doors. Multiple sails can shade different areas while keeping service paths clear.
With several sails, clear numbering is worthwhile. This sounds trivial, but it saves an astonishing amount of time during later installation, storage, and reassembly.
HDPE or waterproof polyester?
HDPE is water-permeable and air-permeable. It is well-suited when UV protection and an open climate under the sail are more important than rain protection. Waterproof polyester provides additional protection during a shower but requires a significant slope and a planned drainage system.
A waterproof sail should never be viewed as a horizontal roof. Without a slope, water can collect; from a structural design perspective, this is precisely what should be avoided.
Before ordering: verify these dimensions
- finished fabric size, not just the distance between attachment points
- heights of all mountings
- door and window movement
- position of railings, walls, and posts
- desired water drainage for waterproof material
In addition to the side lengths, it should be checked whether doors and windows remain free to move and whether the planned attachment points are actually located on suitable structural elements. With waterproof material, the subsequent inclination is also important. A simple sketch showing both the top and side views prevents many misunderstandings.
Large spans for hotels and catering
For large catering terraces in Tyrol or other tourist regions, a single XXL sail is not automatically practical. Several custom-made sails can shade the breakfast area, lounge, and restaurant area separately and remain easier to access.
If only a few load-bearing wall points are available, the structure should not be forced. Additional posts or a smaller sail geometry are often the cleaner solution.
Tyrol, Salzburg region, and urban terraces
In Austria, alpine slopes, hotel terraces, and compact urban areas meet. In Tyrol and other mountainous regions, height differences and open locations play a larger role. In Vienna or Graz, on the other hand, it is often a matter of precisely fitting a smaller area between facades, doors, and neighboring spaces.
A custom-made shade sail can accommodate these differences. For hillside locations, a side view with corner heights helps; for small urban terraces, a clear, compact geometry is key.
Hotel and holiday accommodation: considering seasonal handling
For hotels and holiday properties, attachment points should be located so that the sail remains easily accessible. Several smaller sails can shade the breakfast, lounge, and restaurant areas separately and are easier to store later.
Particularly in tourist regions, sails are often assembled and dismantled regularly. Easily accessible fittings, clear labeling, and manageable fabric sizes save time. Multiple sails can also shade different hotel or restaurant areas independently of one another.
