Different mounting heights can provide a waterproof sail with the necessary water drainage. However, this does not mean that just any low corner will suffice. The water needs a controlled path where neither seating areas, doors, nor neighboring properties are taken by surprise.
Plaster, insulation, railings, extensions, or exposed masonry are not automatically suitable anchor points. Before the final measurements are taken, it should therefore be clarified where the tensile forces can be safely transferred to the structure. If a load-bearing point is missing in the right place, an additional post may be the cleaner solution.

Plan shade where it will be needed later
On a hillside, the effect of low and high sun positions is particularly noticeable. Therefore, first determine the usage time. A sail over the midday sun might turn out to be too short for an evening seating area if the light falls in from the side under the edge.

- Observe the position of the sun at different times
- Note existing height differences
- Keep clear paths for tensioning at every corner
HDPE or waterproof polyester?
HDPE provides airy shade and lets precipitation pass through. Coated polyester can offer additional protection from rain, but requires more discipline regarding slope and tension. Those primarily looking for shade and air circulation are usually well served by HDPE; rain can simply drain through the fabric. If a dining or guest area should also remain usable during a shower, waterproof polyester is an option. In that case, the slope and water drainage must be determined from the start.
