A free-standing shade sail is the right way to think if the seating area is in the middle of the garden or the facade should remain untouched. "Without a house wall," however, does not mean "without a structure": Depending on the shape, three or four posts plus their foundations handle all tension and wind loads.
Choose your shaded area freely, determine post positions early
First, observe the sun's path and mark the desired shaded zone. Then, position the posts outside of pathways, robotic lawnmower loops, roots, and utility lines. Only when these points are fixed can the actual fabric dimensions, including tensioning paths, be derived.

Masts and foundations are part of the supporting structure
Slender posts look light but are subjected to significant bending stress. Dimensioning, material, mounting, and foundation must match the sail size and the location. Ground spikes or decorative garden stakes are not automatically suitable shade sail masts.

Three posts or four – usage decides
A triangle requires three anchor points and has an airy feel, but offers less continuous shade. Rectangles or trapezoids use four points and can cover a table more precisely. Different heights improve spatial tension; with waterproof fabric, they also determine the drainage side.
