Thuringia combines protected urban gardens with the elevations of the Thuringian Forest. In between lie inns, hotels, and properties with significant slopes. It is precisely these transitions that shape the planning process.
Remaining manageable on the edge of the low mountain range
A terrace exposed to the wind does not automatically benefit from the largest possible surface area. Accessible tension points and timely dismantling are more important. Two smaller sails can serve the breakfast and afternoon areas separately.

In the Thuringian Forest or on elevated properties, the sail should therefore not be selected based on shade area alone. Easily accessible connections and a size that can be removed seasonally without great effort are just as much a part of practical planning.
Restaurant terrace based on table layout rather than property boundaries
The relevant shade area follows the seating groups and walkways. A rectangle fits long tables, a trapezoid fits diverging terraces. A straight free-form shape can connect offset corner points.
At an inn or hotel, tables, service paths, and entrances are marked first. It often becomes quickly apparent whether a long rectangle, a trapezoid, or two separate sails better cover the guest seating areas. The property boundary is usually less important for this than the actual operational workflow.
Planning for weather resistance, avoiding winter loads
Both types of fabric are UV-resistant. Waterproof polyester requires a slope; HDPE remains water-permeable. The sail must be dismantled before snowfall.
For a shade sail, weather-resistant does not mean it should withstand every load all year round. Before snow and severe winter weather, a removable fabric belongs indoors. With waterproof polyester, the inclination is also decisive: only if rain can drain reliably does the area under the sail remain usefully accessible.
Urban garden and terrace in Erfurt
In Erfurt, compact gardens, courtyards, and terraces are typical applications. There, a shade sail must often be precisely fitted between doors, facades, and limited property areas. Customization helps to shade the actually used seating area without unnecessarily blocking light or passage.
Especially with terraced houses and inner-city courtyards, a few centimeters can determine whether a terrace door, window, or path remains clear. A targeted shade zone over a table or lounge area usually works better there than a fabric that covers the entire available area.
Custom shade sails with limited mounting options
Especially in smaller urban gardens or hillside terraces, suitable attachment points are not always available where a standard sail would need them. In such cases, one should first check which wall sections, posts, or masonry are actually load-bearing. The shape then follows. A narrower rectangle, a trapezoid, or an additional post is usually more sensible than a large surface that only works with long, unfavorable tensioning paths.
For larger terraces, it can also be more practical to combine two custom shade sails. This allows the dining area and lounge to be shaded separately while keeping paths and doors clear. At the same time, the individual fabrics remain easier to handle when they are taken down to protect against winter loads or strong wind.
Thuringian Basin and Thuringian Forest: different properties, different solutions
Around Erfurt and in the Thuringian Basin, many gardens and terraces are comparatively flat and clearly structured. Towards the Thuringian Forest and in hillier locations, however, height differences, staggered terraces, and open property edges occur more frequently. It is precisely there that customization pays off, because corner heights become just as important as side lengths.
A rectangle can efficiently shade a long table group. A trapezoid fits better when walls or property edges diverge. For highly offset tension points, a straight free-form shape can be useful—provided the construction remains taut and the tensioning paths are easily accessible.
Inn, vacation rental, and private garden
An inn needs clear service paths, a vacation rental needs uncomplicated handling, and the private garden usually only needs shade over a clearly defined area. These differences should determine the size more than the available plot. Especially with large terraces, it is often more sensible to shade two usage zones separately instead of forcing everything under a single sail.
