UNICOVR Custom-made Shade Sail

Planning shade sails in Greece – mainland, islands, and restaurant terraces

On Greek terraces, shade is often the deciding factor in whether a seating area is used at all during the midday heat. A custom-made shade sail should therefore focus primarily on the area actually occupied – tables, lounge, or pool area – rather than simply covering as much of the property as possible.

In a tavern, the most important shaded area is above the tables; walkways and access paths remain clear.

Islands and open coastal locations: staying manageable

Where wind hits an open area with greater force, easily accessible fastenings are particularly important. A sail must not only be tensioned, but also removable in good time if the weather becomes unsuitable. Two smaller sails can therefore be more practical than a single very large one.

In wind-exposed island locations, the sail surface should be chosen so that it not only functions during normal operation, but can also be taken down in time. Short, accessible tensioning distances are often more important for everyday use than maximum size.

Courtyards: airflow is just as important as shade

Heat can build up in sheltered courtyards. Water-permeable HDPE is an interesting option here because air can escape upwards and rain runs through the fabric. For offset walls, trapezoidal or straight free-form shapes are suitable.

In narrow courtyards, an overly large, solid fabric can quickly feel heavy. HDPE allows for better air circulation and lets rain pass through. A compactly placed rectangle or trapezoid shades the seating area without unnecessarily screening off the entire courtyard.

Tavern and hotel: planning shade according to operational flow

Breakfast areas, pool zones, and evening terraces are used at different times. Multiple sails can shade these areas independently. Walkways, stairs, and doors remain clear instead of having to be organized around an oversized fabric area later.

For multiple identical terraces or rooms, each sail should be clearly labeled. By the time it comes to setting them up again after the season, it will be clear why this made sense.

Crete: holiday homes and hotel terraces with clear geometry

On Crete, holiday homes, hotels, and open terraces are typical applications. Rectangles are suitable for contiguous table areas, triangles for smaller shaded islands, and trapezoids for diverging walls or terrace edges.

On Crete, open locations, holiday rentals, and large terraces often come together. For hotels or multiple apartments, clearly numbered fabrics and easily accessible fittings are particularly practical. For private holiday homes, ease of use is what counts.

Waterproof polyester requires a clear drainage path

Those who also want protection from rain can choose a waterproof sail. The fabric must be installed with a slope so that water does not collect. Especially on natural stone or tiled surfaces, it should be clear where the drainage leads, so that the dry seating area does not end up right next to a wet path.

The lowest point should be positioned so that rain is not directed onto stairs, in front of doors, or into the middle of walkways. On natural stone or tiled surfaces, poor drainage is particularly noticeable because water remains visible there for longer.

Pool, tavern, and holiday home need different shade zones

At the pool, the entire water surface should not be automatically covered. Frequently, the sunbathing or seating area is the more important zone. At taverns, shade over the tables is what matters, while walkways remain clear. Holiday homes, on the other hand, benefit from a simple, easily accessible construction.

If there are few attachment options, freestanding posts can help. In open island locations, it remains important that the sail can be removed in good time during unfavorable weather.

Mainland, islands, and courtyards: airiness or weather protection?

On Greek islands and in open coastal locations, wind plays a bigger role, whereas in sheltered courtyards, heat and air circulation tend to be the issues. A custom-made shade sail can respond to this: HDPE remains open and breathable, while waterproof polyester provides additional protection against rain but requires a slope.

The shape should also be derived from how it is used. A rectangle over several tables is often efficient, a trapezoid fits angled walls, and a smaller triangle can specifically shade a lounge or waiting area.

Holiday home and tavern: intuitive construction instead of complicated solutions

For holiday homes and taverns, a sail should remain easy to operate. Easily accessible connections, clear identification, and a manageable fabric size are more important than maximum surface area. For multiple areas, separate sails can be the better solution.

A good solution is immediately intuitive in everyday use. Guests or staff should be able to see how the sail is tensioned or removed without a long explanation. Clear geometry and simple fittings are often more valuable than a spectacular special shape.
