UNICOVR Custom-made Shade Sail

Planning shade sails in Italy – from Lake Garda to the agriturismo

Italian outdoor areas range from small city courtyards to sprawling agriturismos. Custom manufacturing is particularly sensible when existing architecture, natural stone walls, or sloping terraces dictate the geometry, and a standard sail would cover either too much or too little area.

Courtyard: Preserving architecture and air circulation

Window shutters, arches, walls, and doors set clear boundaries. A shade sail should not block these elements. For offset wall points, a trapezoid or a straight free-form shape can be useful; varying mounting heights also help to cleanly manage walkways and drainage slopes.

For long dining tables and historical courtyards, it is worth adjusting the shaded area to suit the usage and architecture.

Agriturismo and gastronomy: The seating arrangement determines the fabric

For long tables, a rectangle provides a particularly large amount of usable shade. If the courtyard widens towards the back, a trapezoid may fit better. Multiple sails are sensible if breakfast, tasting, and lounge areas are spatially separated.

It is important to keep service paths and doors clear. While a fabric that is too large might cover more square meters, it does not automatically create better outdoor dining.

Lake Garda: Slopes, open locations, and frequent use

Around Lake Garda, terraces with elevation changes meet open locations and tourist use. There, the structure should be planned so that tensioning points remain accessible and the sail can be removed seasonally without unnecessary effort.

At hotels and holiday apartments around the lake, varying heights, intensive use, and seasonal disassembly often come together. A well-planned sail must therefore not only provide shade but also be easily accessible and clearly manageable during daily operations.

Dividing large spans

A very wide terrace does not necessarily have to be spanned with a single fabric. Two smaller rectangles or a rectangle plus a trapezoid can cover different seating areas more precisely. This also reduces dependence on a few attachment points that are extremely far apart.

Several smaller fabrics can also respond better to table groups, lounges, or walkways. They can be installed and stored seasonally independently of one another. Especially in gastronomy and hotel operations, this flexibility is often more valuable than maximum individual size.

Rain protection: Do not improvise slopes afterwards

Waterproof polyester can keep a dining area usable even during a short shower. For this, it must be determined before ordering which corner point is higher and which is lower. The water should be directed neither toward the house wall nor onto a heavily used walkway.

HDPE is the more open alternative when pure sun protection is the priority. Rain can pass through, and air can circulate.

Few attachment options with historical structures

Especially in older courtyards or with natural stone facades, secure wall points are not a given. Therefore, it should first be clarified which areas are load-bearing. Only then can the appropriate shape be developed. An additional post can be structurally cleaner than an oversized fabric with long tensioning paths.

For large agriturismo or hotel terraces, multiple sails are often more sensible. They can be assigned to different table groups and dismantled individually if required.

Northern Italy, Tuscany, and the Adriatic coast: Architecture and usage set the tone

A courtyard in Northern Italy, an agriturismo terrace in Tuscany, and an open restaurant area on the Adriatic do not require the same solution. In the north, offset walls and historical building structures are often the defining factors. In Tuscany, the focus is on long dining tables and courtyards, while the open location plays a stronger role on the Adriatic coast.

A custom shade sail should therefore incorporate the existing architecture. Rectangles suit long table groups, trapezoids suit widening courtyards, and straight free-forms suit offset attachment points.

Holiday rentals and hotels: Considering seasonal use

At holiday apartments and hotels, sails are regularly put up and taken down. Clearly marked fabrics, easily accessible fittings, and comprehensible dimensional sketches save a lot of effort. For multiple terraces, each sail should be clearly assigned to a specific area.

For several similar terraces, clear numbering of the fabrics helps. This makes it easy to trace which sail belongs where and how it is oriented. This saves time during setup, cleaning, and storage.
