UNICOVR Custom-made Shade Sail

Custom-made shade sails for daycare centers and kindergartens

On a daycare outdoor area, not every sunny spot is equally important. Particularly relevant are places where children play for long periods and with deep engagement: sandboxes, mud and water areas, seating and dining areas, and quiet zones. A custom-made shade sail can shade exactly these areas without covering the entire site.

Planning, however, must go beyond mere fabric size. Children move spontaneously, reach for accessible parts, and use the terrain differently than adults. Attachment points, tension ropes, ground sleeves, and operating paths must therefore be included in the risk assessment and subsequent inspection procedure.

On daycare premises, the areas actually used heavily for play should be targeted for shading.

Shade sails for daycares and kindergartens: Shade in the right place

Observe the outdoor area on several sunny days. Where do the children play between late morning and afternoon? Which areas are avoided in summer? Where do staff also need a protected spot for supervision? A priority map is created from these observations. Only then should the shape and attachment points be determined.

The DGUV (German Social Accident Insurance) points to technical, organizational, and personal measures for sun protection in childcare. A shade sail can be part of this overall concept, but it does not replace daily routines, clothing, hydration, or other protective measures.

Planning from a child's perspective

  • Tension ropes and fittings must not create accessible risks of entrapment, climbing, or strangulation.
  • Masts and ground areas must be planned so that walking and play areas are not impaired by impact or tripping hazards.
  • Supervision must not be hindered by the sail or its fastenings.
  • Removal during storms or unsuitable weather must be possible quickly and without improvised ladder solutions.
  • Regular visual inspections and responsibilities should be documented in writing.

HDPE or waterproof polyester?

Water-permeable HDPE offers airy shade and lets rain pass through. It can make sense when the focus is on UV and heat protection. Waterproof polyester with a PU coating provides additional protection against rain but places higher demands on slope, water drainage, and tension. Over sand or mud areas, it should also be considered where the runoff water is allowed to go.

The decision-making aid waterproof or water-permeable explains the practical differences.

Documents for providers, specialist planning, and procurement

For a traceable project file, we recommend a site plan, photos, desired shade times, dimensions, material choice, description of attachment points, and responsibility for installation and inspection. Depending on size and construction, structural verification, approval from the provider, building code inspections, or other specialist planning may be required. Binding requirements must be clarified for the specific site.

Custom-made instead of compromises over the sandbox

UNICOVR shade sails can be made rectangular, square, triangular, trapezoidal, or as a free form with straight edges. This allows the shaded area to be adapted to existing buildings, play equipment, and necessary safety clearances. The sail should not simply be ordered as large as the distance between the attachment points; tension distance and connecting parts must be taken into account. Use the measurement guide for this purpose.

We only check optional installation on a project-specific basis depending on location, ground conditions, and scope. The overall professional responsibility of the provider and, where applicable, other planning participants remains unaffected.

You can find an in-depth checklist on play and walking paths, material selection, weather routines, and regular inspections in the guide Planning shade sails for daycares and schools.
