L-shaped terraces, protruding walls, and staggered house walls rarely fit a standard rectangle. Anyone who tries to force the entire contour with a single fabric sheet will end up with long tensioning distances, poorly usable corners, or shade in the wrong place. A corner solution therefore starts with the layout.
Do not confuse a complex area with a single fabric shape
First, mark which sub-areas actually need to be shaded. A wall projection or narrow connecting passage does not automatically have to be under the sail. Often, a trapezoid, a triangle, or two smaller areas result in a cleaner and easier-to-tension solution.

At UNICOVR, freeform means straight edges
A custom freeform shape can accommodate uneven sides and offset corners. The edges are straight, not concave. For an accurate order, all sides and diagonals must be clearly designated; a rough length-width specification is not sufficient for angled geometries.

Making two sails work separately at a corner
When using multiple fabrics, each area requires its own tensioning points and sufficient spacing. Edges should neither rub against each other nor channel rainwater into the center in an uncontrolled way. Varying heights can help organize the corner spatially, but they increase the importance of a clear dimensioned sketch.
Further planning instructions can be found under Shade sails for the terrace.
Measuring a corner solution accurately
- Only shade the sub-areas that are actually used
- Clearly label all sides and control dimensions
- Take the straight edges of the freeform into account
- Plan for spacing between multiple fabrics
Configure shade sails for a corner solution
UNICOVR shade sails can be configured as a rectangle, square, triangle, trapezoid, or freeform with straight edges. The required fabric dimension is entered after defining the attachment points and tensioning paths. The price appears immediately; the most important influencing factors are explained on the page How much does a custom shade sail cost?
