Two house walls seem to be the ideal starting point: anchor points are available on both sides, and additional posts seem superfluous. In practice, however, the real work starts here. The façade structure, windows, roof drainage, and accelerated airflow between buildings determine whether and how the solution will work.
Not every wall is a suitable partner
Plaster or insulation reveal little about the load-bearing substrate. Tensile forces must be safely transferred into suitable structural components. With two different buildings, the construction, ownership, and movement behavior may differ. Both sides are inspected independently.

Realistically assess the wind tunnel effect between buildings
Narrow passageways can channel gusts. A large fabric will be subject to greater stress there, even if the courtyard seems sheltered. Keep the surface area manageable, plan for accessible connections, and leave sufficient distance from roof edges, windows, and the façade.

Use height offset for tension and rainwater drainage
Different attachment heights create spatial tension. With waterproof polyester, this turns into a clear water path toward a defined low corner. Downpipes, doors, and neighboring surfaces must not be located there. HDPE allows rain to pass through but also requires tight, easily accessible installation.

Inspect both building sides separately
- Determine wall construction and load-bearing substrate
- Clarify ownership and approval issues
- Keep windows, downpipes, and roof edges clear
- Plan for the wind tunnel effect and easy dismantling
Configuring shade sails between buildings
UNICOVR shade sails can be configured as rectangles, squares, triangles, trapezoids, or custom shapes with straight edges. The required fabric size is entered after defining the anchor points and tensioning paths. The price appears immediately; the most important influencing factors are explained on the page How much does a custom shade sail cost?
