A shade sail over a pool shouldn't simply cover as much area as possible. What matters is where shade is needed during the actual times you use the pool: over the shallow entry, on the sun loungers, at the seating edge, or partially over the water. Especially in the afternoon, shade often shifts out of the desired zone faster than a floor plan might suggest.
UNICOVR shade sails are custom-made. This allows the shape to be adapted to the pool, terrace, and existing attachment points without turning the sail into a pool cover. It remains shade for the usage area—not a safety barrier against falling in and no substitute for a proper pool cover.
Shade sails over the pool: planning the right shade zone
Observe the area on a sunny day at the times when the pool is actually used. Mark where the shadow falls in the morning, at noon, and in the late afternoon. Often, a deliberately shifted sail area is more useful than an oversized cloth directly over the entire water surface.
Our guide on how to plan the correct size and shade area of a shade sail is helpful here.

The sail dimension is not the same as the pool dimension
Connection elements and tensioning space are required between the cloth and the fixed attachment points. Furthermore, pathways around the pool, existing covers, cleaning equipment, and, if applicable, technical access points must be kept clear. Therefore, first determine the final attachment points and derive the order dimensions from them.
HDPE or waterproof shade sail by the pool?
Water-permeable HDPE offers airy shade and lets rain pass through. This can be pleasant for open pool areas because less heat accumulates under the sail. Waterproof, PU-coated polyester provides additional protection against showers but requires a clear gradient and a controlled drainage system.
With the waterproof version, rainwater should not be directed uncontrollably over walkways or directly into the pool. You can find a detailed decision-making aid under waterproof or water-permeable.
Keeping attachment points and walkways clear and safe
Posts, turnbuckles, and ropes must not be located where people walk barefoot, jump, or operate a pool cover. Low diagonal guy lines are unsuitable. The distance to pipes, pool technology, and underground installations must also be clarified before foundation work begins. The load-bearing capacity of wall points, masts, and foundations must be checked professionally on-site.
Wind, maintenance, and seasonal removal
An open location by the water can be susceptible to wind. Therefore, plan from the start how the sail remains accessible and can be removed in time during strong winds. Chlorine or salt-containing splashes should not dry permanently on the fabric; clean the cloth only according to the care instructions and store it completely dry.
