Custom or standard-sized shade sails? When a custom-made solution is worth it

Shade sails are available in many standard sizes—but custom-made sails are also offered. Which option makes more sense depends primarily on how freely you can choose your attachment points and how precisely defined the area to be shaded is.

A custom-made sail is not automatically necessary for every garden. Conversely, a cheap standard size can become expensive if it requires additional posts to be moved, attachment points to be changed, or major compromises to be made regarding the shaded area.

When is a standard size a good choice?

A standard parasol or sail can be a good fit if you can still freely determine the attachment points, the outdoor area offers sufficient space, and a common rectangular or triangular size covers the desired area effectively.

This is possible, for example, in a newly landscaped garden area where posts are set only after the sail has been selected. Here, the construction can be adapted to the existing product dimensions.

When is a custom-made shade sail worth considering?

Custom production shows its advantages when the installation situation already imposes fixed boundaries. Typical examples include existing house walls, established posts, narrow terraces, offset corners, areas of varying widths, or spaces where only specific attachment points can be used.

Instead of adapting the environment to the sail, the sail is then tailored to the planned geometry.

Benefit 1: Dimensions to fit existing points

If the attachment points are already set, a custom sail can be manufactured to the dimensions derived from them. It remains important to plan sufficient space between the attachment point and the sail for tensioning and connecting elements.

We explain how this works under Measuring shade sails correctly.

Benefit 2: More choice in shape

Standard offers usually focus on common rectangular and triangular sizes. Depending on the supplier, custom manufacturing may also allow for trapezoids or free-form geometries. This is helpful if an area widens towards the outside, a post is offset, or a classic standard shape leaves an unnecessarily large area unshaded.

You can find a decision-making guide in our Comparison of shade sail shapes.

Benefit 3: More targeted shade area planning

A suitable size can help to better cover the desired area of use. However, when planning a custom order, one should not look only at the floor plan. The sun's position and the mounting height shift the actual shaded zone.

What are the arguments for a standard size?

Standard products are often available more quickly and can be attractively priced because they are produced in fixed dimensions. If you have enough leeway during installation, you may not need a custom-made product.

The decisive point is therefore not whether custom manufacturing is fundamentally "better," but whether it solves a specific problem with your installation situation.

What is the cost of a poor fit?

A sail that is too large may not be tensioned sufficiently. A sail that is too small may provide less shade than expected. If there is a lack of tensioning space, the installation must be changed. If standard points do not fit, additional posts or other structural adjustments may be necessary.

These consequential costs and the additional effort should be included in a fair comparison between standard and custom manufacturing.

Waterproof shade sail: Plan fit and slope together

With waterproof sails, rainwater drainage must be considered. The height of the individual attachment points and the tension should be planned so that water does not pool unnecessarily on the surface. For fixed points, a custom geometry can help adapt the sail to this plan.

Who is a custom shade sail particularly suitable for?

  • Terraces with pre-existing wall or post points
  • Areas that differ significantly from standard sizes
  • Trapezoidal or irregular layouts
  • Situations with limited space for additional posts
  • Projects where a specific shade area is intended to be covered
  • Designs where dimensions and shape should be visually coordinated with the architecture or garden

Configure your custom UNICOVR shade sail

The custom UNICOVR shade sail can currently be configured as a rectangle/square, trapezoid, scalene or right-angled triangle, and as a free form. It is designed as a waterproof and UV-resistant outdoor solution.

Before configuring, you should finalize your attachment points, measure the distances carefully, and consider tensioning space as well as water drainage.

Conclusion: A standard size is ideal if the surroundings can be flexibly adapted to the sail. Custom manufacturing is especially worth it where the surroundings are already fixed and the sail must be tailored to existing dimensions, points, and shapes.
